How to DJ with Spotify: The Game-Changing Update for DJs Worldwide & in India

Updated: Sep 30

Spotify is now officially integrated with Rekordbox, Serato, and djay Pro — and for DJs in India, it’s an even bigger breakthrough.

Introduction

For years, DJs around the world have asked one question: “Can I DJ with Spotify?”

The answer used to be a frustrating “no.” While other streaming platforms like TIDAL, Beatport, and SoundCloud Go+ jumped into DJ integrations, Spotify stayed silent. This meant DJs had to rely on downloaded files, record pools, or alternative streaming services.

But that all changes now. As of yesterday, Spotify announced native support inside Rekordbox, Serato, and djay Pro.

Before you read any further — Spotify may not be active for Indian DJs untill further announcements. This upgrade is for only 51 countries as of now.

This is a massive development for DJs everywhere, and an even bigger win for Indian DJs, where Bollywood and Punjabi music dominate weddings, clubs, and open-format events.

Let’s explore:

  • Why Spotify integration matters

  • The global pros — and the India-specific advantages

  • The limitations you need to know

  • Step-by-step setup guides for Rekordbox, Serato, and djay Pro

  • Pro tips for making the most of it

  • A final verdict for DJs

Why Use Spotify for DJing? (The Pros)

Spotify inside your DJ software brings a whole new level of convenience and flexibility. Here’s why:

  • One library for everything: No more managing separate files or imports. Your Spotify playlists and liked songs are instantly available inside DJ software.

  • Instant updates: Edit a playlist on your phone during the day, and see the changes reflected live in Rekordbox, Serato, or djay Pro.

  • Access to the full Spotify catalog: Explore millions of tracks — from mainstream hits to underground gems including Indian mainstream pop music lists — and load them straight into your decks.

  • Seamless prep workflow: Build, tweak, and test playlists anywhere, knowing they’ll be ready for your next gig.

  • A massive win for Indian DJs: Bollywood & Punjabi streaming [FUTURE PREDICTIONS]: Until now, DJs in India couldn’t easily integrate Bollywood, Punjabi, or regional tracks into rekordbox or any other DJ softwares like Serato pro or djay Pro. This limited many open-format DJs, especially at weddings, private parties, and clubs where such music is essential.

With this update, that barrier is gone. DJs in India can now stream Bollywood and Punjabi playlists directly inside Rekordbox, Serato, or djay Pro, making it easier than ever to deliver the sets their audiences want.

The Limitations (Cons to Consider)

While exciting, Spotify DJ integration comes with trade-offs you should know:

  • Several DJ / tech news outlets confirm that Spotify-Rekordbox integration is being rolled out, but that it’s limited to certain regions and not every country.

  • No stems / multitracks: You cannot separate vocals, drums, or instruments like you can with downloaded files.

  • No offline mode: Spotify streaming requires a constant internet connection. Offline saved tracks won’t work in DJ software.

  • Spotify Premium required: Only Premium subscribers can access Spotify inside DJ apps.

  • Fewer remixes and DJ edits: While you’ll get Bollywood, Punjabi, and mainstream releases, you won’t find extended mixes, exclusive remixes, or bootlegs that exist on DJ pools.

  • Internet reliability in India: Urban DJs may have stable Wi-Fi or 5G, but weddings and outdoor events in smaller towns may face patchy internet — a potential risk during live sets.

How to Dj With Spotify | Specially For Indian DJs

Here’s a quick setup guide for each platform:

1. Rekordbox + Spotify

  1. Update to the latest version of Rekordbox (Mac/Windows)

  2. Log into your Spotify Premium account inside Rekordbox

  3. Browse your Spotify playlists and full library

  4. Mix tracks in Performance Mode with your Pioneer / AlphaTheta gear

2. djay Pro + Spotify

  1. Update to the latest version of djay Pro

  2. Connect your Spotify Premium account

  3. Access liked songs, playlists, and the Spotify library

  4. Mix on desktop or mobile — great for DJs on the move

3. Serato DJ + Spotify

  1. Update to the latest Serato DJ Pro (3.3.5+) or Serato DJ Lite

  2. Log into your Spotify Premium account inside Serato

  3. Access your playlists, liked songs, and Spotify’s full catalog

  4. Mix across up to 4 decks

Pro Tips to Get the Most Out of Spotify DJing

  • Always test your internet before gigs — use wired connections where possible.

  • Hybrid sets work best: combine local downloaded tracks + Spotify streaming.

  • Curate regional playlists if you’re an Indian DJ (e.g., “Bollywood 128 BPM,” “Punjabi Club Anthems”).

  • Pre-load tracks in advance to avoid lag or buffering.

  • Use Spotify for discovery: test tracks from Spotify, then purchase/download pro edits from record pools for critical gigs.

What we do know? [as of now]

  • The rollout is limited to 51 markets initially.

  • The official Rekordbox site says the Spotify support is “available in the following countries and regions” and lists USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Finland, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc.

  • Forums / user reports suggest some users have updated Rekordbox and still do not see a Spotify option in their media browser — indicating that regional rollout is staggered or restricted. “Same here, update Rekordbox and no option available for Spotify. Maybe not available for everyone?”

  • The Rekordbox “streaming services” page for India mentions support for Beatport LINK and SoundCloud Go+, but makes no mention of Spotify

  • Spotify says it will allow browsing of your playlists and streaming of tracks inside desktop DJ apps like Rekordbox, Serato, and djay.

  • The integration is only for desktop (Windows/macOS) — mobile versions won’t support Spotify streaming for now.

  • Due to licensing, the use is intended for “non-commercial” / personal use (i.e. home mixing), not for public DJ sets.

What is unclear or likely not available yet (for India)

  • I could not find confirmation that India is included among the supported 51 markets. Reports list many Western and Asia / Pacific regions (Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan) but India is not explicitly mentioned in those lists.

  • Until Rekordbox (or Spotify’s announcements) publish India in their supported markets list, residents in India may not yet see the Spotify option in Rekordbox.

  • Also, previous to this reintroduction, Spotify had ended support for third-party DJ integrations in July 2020 (so older documentation still reflects “no Spotify in Rekordbox”)

  • Even if support becomes available, sometimes regional licensing deals (copyright laws, local distribution rights) may restrict availability in India.

Verdict: What This Means for DJs

So, Spotify integration with Rekordbox is relaunching globally, but it may not yet be active in India (or not in your version/region) until the service officially includes

For Indian DJs, in future, if this update applies then this might be even more transformative:

  • Bollywood, Punjabi, and regional music are now accessible directly inside Rekordbox, Serato, and djay Pro.

  • Open-format DJs at weddings, college events, and clubs can now stream the music their audiences demand, without juggling between apps or carrying external libraries.

  • It eliminates a long-standing barrier that has held back DJs in India from fully adopting streaming in their sets.

Yes, limitations remain — no stems, no offline mode, and dependency on internet stability. But the cultural and practical advantages, especially in India, are huge.

🎧 Final Word: If you’re a DJ, this is the update you’ve been waiting for. For Indian DJs, it’s nothing short of revolutionary. Update your DJ software, connect your Spotify Premium, and start curating your Bollywood and Punjabi playlists today.
